Pet Product Reviews: Homemade Cat Toys & Blankets

       Homemade Cat Toys and Accessories

We have rounded up some popular, talented people who create handcrafted cat toys and accessories.

Prince Pan Pan’s Cat Blankets are actually made by his human mother, who prefers to remain anonymous. Prince Pan Pan takes her orders, while Prince Pippin is Quality Control and Assurance Engineer (downsizing/doing more with less). On facebook they all can be located at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Neptune-The-Special-Cat/
260978582681#!/PrincePanpan?fref=ts . Prince Pan Pan’s blankets feature very thick fleece, with a variety of cat patterned fabric, which allows them to create custom orders.
The edges of each blanket are either knotted or braided, and they also offer custom embroidering of your cat’s name. The braided edge blanket is their signature blanket.
I couldn’t believe it when they said they had the perfect pattern for our Mr. Moo. We had to order Mr. Moo a custom blanket, since he was new to our house, and all our other cats had blankets!!! As you see Mr. Moo’s custom blanket pretty much matches Mr. Moo!!!
Prince Pan Pan even embroidered Mr. Moo’s name in it, so our other cats would know this is his blanket/bed.

mrmooblankie

Blankets are $25 for the size we got, and they make perfect beds when folded in half, as we do. Inquire to their facebook page for more information and available sizes.

Sharon L. Dreyer knits dog sweaters and cat blankets and donates all proceeds to the501C3 she volunteers forARI –Animal Rescue, Inc. www.animalrescueinc.org. All of her
blankets are knitted with 4 separate 4ply strands of 100% mediuweight acrylic yarn that are machine washable and dryable. The cost of these blankets are a minimum of a $20 donation to ARI, plus 7.50 shipping in the U.S.
4 of my 5 cats like them because they are so plush and thick. They also seem to see colors, because Neptune likes his Texas Rangers Red White and Blue team color blanket, and Tiger likes her feminine peach, cream, sky blue and lilac blanket. We fold them in half, so they are even warmer and thicker. They take up an average love seat cushion when laid flat.

031
You can use these blankets as pads, for your cat to lie on, and they also protect yourfurniture from collecting cat hair.
Sharon will knit you a custom blanket if you specify colors. She also accommodates sports fans, and can match virtually all professional teams, if you tell her the colors.
Seasonal and holiday colors are also available.

Lead time for blankets is about 1 week from receiving payment.
As far as dog sweaters, she offers all sizes, and in custom colors, seasonal and holiday colors, too. Prices vary depending on size. Contact her for more information on either
dog sweaters or cat blankets:

Mr. Moo with KC pillow

Kitty Collage grows their own Catnip (Trappers Treats), and offers cat pillows, cat toys and packets of catnip for sale. Prices are listed on their website, along with photos. They make medium sized pillows for cats to sleep on, and they also have little mini-pillow your cat can bat around or just sniff as it walks by.

Nep and KC pillow1
Two of my 5 cats have Kitty Collage sleeping pillows, and they both use them every day.
Kitty Collage also offers custom orders, seasonal patterns, and several themes. We ordered beach themed pillows in January, for our friends on the east coast, and we received Christmas pillows in October for Mr. Moo and Neptune.
Sometimes the bulk containers of store bought catnip is either too strong or used up, but Kitty Collage offers a perfect blend of catnip, which allows a cat to sleep on a pillow containing catnip. Mr. Moo, my formerly stray cat thinks pillows filled with catnip are the greatest invention after blankets.

Nep and KC pillow2
One of my cats is deaf, so his nose is much more sensitive than a hearing cat’s nose is, but he tells me Kitty Collage catnip is perfect, and not too overwhelming. I also have a
cat who is now addicted to Kitty Collage catnip, and she carries the small catnip pillow in her mouth to wherever she is going to rest or hang out at.
You can find Kitty Collage on facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/

Angela’s Kritter Crochet, on facebook https://www.facebook.com/pages/Neptune-The-
Special-Cat/260978582681?ref=tn_tnmn#!/AngelasKritterCrochet , creates a variety of
interesting items.
Angelas cat toys 1

The picture above shows mousie cat toys, crocheted of course, in a variety of colors, and also available in seasonal themes, with catnip inside, and bells, to make this toy mouse twice as fun. Mousie is $4.00 each or 3 for $10. Super Mousies are also available, which are bigger mice, with presumable more catnip and extra bells, which Angela sells for $6 each.
Angelas cat toys

This picture displays a different kind and shape of a cat toy, and it appears to be appealing to cats, or at least would arouse their curiosity. Add light weight and spiral head, with a pom pom at the end of the tail,
and it seems like the perfect cat toy to bat around, fling airborne, or just attack. Angela sells these for $5.50 each, or 3 for $12. These can also be used as bookmarks.
Angelas cat toys 2

This picture features a catnip bell door hanger. Your cat is supposed to ring, or learn to ring the bell when it wants out, but more than likely, your cat will sit there and inhale the catnip and then bat the ball around, which activates the bells, which is sure to make for a pleasant day for the cats’ human!!!! Nevertheless, it still looks fun, for a cat. I bet it smells even better to them. Angela sells these for $10 each. All items are available in custom or seasonal colors.

Pet Product Reviews: Cat Dancer/Cat Charmer

Cat Dancer/Cat Charmer

catcharmer1

If you only buy one toy for your cat, this one would be it. Cat dancer activates any cat,
irregardless of age. Our 14 year old granny cat loves playing with it, and it keeps her cat
skills in shape.

catcharmer2

Cat Dancer is a simple idea—wave a long skinny something in front of a cats face, they
will always reach for it. A two foot wand introduces a 4-and-a-half foot skinny piece of
colorful flannel to your cat, and your cat lights up, and goes for it. We call it catting here
at our house, similar to fishing!!

For elder cats, you can slide it on the floor (any surface) like a snake. It aids their hand-
eye coordination while also circulating their blood and it is a form of exercise. If they are
under a table, you can stand near the table and dangle it in front of them, having the end
barely touch the floor, this allows it to ‘dance’ on the floor in front of them.
For all other cats, you can run around the house dangling the piece of flannel 4 feet
behind you and your cat will follow. If you don’t want to run around your house, you can
wait for the grandkids to visit, and this will occupy all involved!!!
You can also use Cat Dancer as a whip or fishing type of toy, by introducing it to your
cat by ‘casting it’ much like a fishing pole, and then bringing it back, casting it and
bringing it back. I let my cats get in every now and then, but not every time. And I make
it more challenging the more they do catch it.
The best way to use cat dancer is to make your cat ‘dance’. Stand near them and dangle
the flannel snake 6-12 inches above their head, or tease them by allowing the flannel to
get close but just out of reach; they WILL jump for it every time. I can get two of my cats
airborne pretty high and since we got our first one as a gift, I’ve had to buy two more to
accommodate 3 rooms and 5 cats, and I spend one hour every day playing dancing cats
with my cats.
I am sure you can create other games to play with your cat dancer and catmates,
especially during winter, when everybody is stuck indoors.
For my slightly overweight cat, Cat Dancer is her only form of exercise, other than
walking to her food bowl or litter box. So we emphasize that she play or um exercise at
least 15 minutes per day with her favorite toy.
I have never seen anything remotely close or as effective as Cat Dancer from any boxy
pet stores. The only place to find them is online, and they range from $1 to $18, as does
shipping. Several sites offered them for under $8. Search Cat Dancer or Cat Charmer, all
the same companies kept popping up.
Cat Dancer is a versatile toy, which cats of any or all ages can play with and enjoy. It
helps them retain cat skills and its exercise disguised as fun.

dodgercattoy

My five cats each give Cat Dancer 4 paws up, and I give it two thumbs up.

Milk Bone Trail Mix for Dogs

a review by Miss Sharon

Trail Mix is a brand new product from Milk Bone. Unlike other edible commercial dog products, these are all natural, with NO CORN, preservatives, or artificial flavorings.
Instead, you and your canine pal with find yummy morsels of oats, beef and sweet potato.
When I first saw the package I thought the sweet potato chunks were carrots, and this piqued my curiosity, since our vet keeps telling me to reduce our dog food by ¼ cup, and replace it with green beans or carrots. I thought maybe this was a creative way to get him to eat his veggies. And I was pleasantly surprised when he gobbled up every piece.
Then I checked the package and was even more amazed my dog was actually eating and enjoying sweet potato chunks!!!
The sweep potato chunks looked like dried carrots, the beef is a chewy morsel, and the oats are light and dark colored itty bitty tiny miniature milk bones.
Just like the package advertises, Trail Mix is both chewy and crunchy, and the chunks and morsels are all one bite snacks. No more leftover crumbs of dog snacks on your hard floor or in your carpeting!!!!

milkbone2

The sweet potato and beef are soft and chewy, while the oats are hard and crunchy.
Trail Mix is perfect for a training reward, since every bite is bite size, with a variety of flavors and shapes.
I make my dog work for his snacks, so with these small bite size snacks, and others like them, which I will review soon, I have taught my Bowzer to catch his treats. Those he doesn’t catch, I get to toss it again. I give him 5-7 snacks each evening, which is hardly over working him; sometimes I make him jump for them. My desk has more dog and cat
treats in it, than office supplies!!!! All of my animals gather at my desk for snack time while mom works at home.
If you don’t think your dog will eat sweet potatoes, try playing a game like we do, though I don’t think you will have any problems, if my dog of all dogs, gobbled them up.
Trail Mix is yet another package where the manufacturer crams the bag full. I love these companies and products. In a day where cereal boxes are filled 1/3 of capacity, it is soooo
refreshing to find pet snacks crammed full of product.
The price is right, too, providing you shop at Target, WalMart, CostCo, or other retailer. Once again, I found PetSmarts sale price to still be higher than Target. Target has them
priced at $2.89 for a 9 ounce bag, and PetSmarts sale price was $4.49, regularly 4.99.
I also saw a jug of Trail Mix, which must have been the 3 lb mega-size, which is perfect for families with multiple dogs, or for a shelter or rescue organization, online for $13.99.
I didn’t see this size at Target.
You can print coupons if you visit http://www.milkbone.com/ . Plus you can view the different sizes of Trail Mix, and review their other dog and puppy products.
The best thing about Milkbone is that a portion of every MilkBone product sales is given to their charity which trains service dogs. You can read about that on their website, too.

Bowzer and I give MilkBone Trail Mix 4 paws and two thumbs up.

Friskies Party Mix (Crunchy) Cat Treats

We just call it Party Mix, in our kittyland group on facebook; and it seems like every month they invent a new, yummy flavor cats love. To my deaf white cat every flavor of Party Mix is an addiction. I’m an enabler, I guess.
They have at least 5 flavors as I write this. By the time you find them at your store, Friskies will have a 6th flavor. They know people spend billions of dollars on our pets each year, and they want their share of our dollars.
From left to right, in my photo, we see Original in Orange, Cheezy Craze in yellow, Beachside Crunch in blue, and Picnic in green.
Party Mix is one of the few companies who really pack their bags full, until the zipper lock barely closes. I like this idea. It’s one of the reasons I began buying Party Mix over a year…

Yeooow Cat Toys

A review by Miss Sharon

If you own a cat, It doesn’t matter which toy you have, Yeowww will be a hit at your house.
We have 5 cats and ended up purchasing 5 Yeowww GreenFish and YellowFish (shown), so they could each have one.
The first one came as a gift, and some of our other cats were jealous, and wanted their own, so we now have one GreenFish per cat.
They also make a sardine, cigar, and a banana, some of which are shown below.
The fish is a perfect size to be bunny kicked, and both green and yellow are appealing at our house. The sardine is also a good size, allowing cats to bat it around and then chase it and bat it again. The cigar is just an interesting shape for cats. The banana, which we dont own YET, is fun according to many of our furriends. We give bananas as gifts.
All of these Yeoww products occupy a cat, for those times when their human isn’t available to play.
Yeoww toys inspire the bunny kick reflex in cats, and reinforce their hunting instinct.
The catnip inside them seems to be a perfect blend, enticing even the not so active cat.
Yeowww products are available at many online dealers, and are about 6.95 each. The sardines are available in a sardine pack of many. Our furriends stock up on these packs and give them away at kitties-in-need auctions, or as gifts.
We recommend any Yeowww product, so we give this a four paws up rating!!!

Pet Product Reviews: Friskies Rise & Shine Dry Food

Made by Friskies (Purina), this cat food is brand new to the market, and 5 out of 5 cats here prefer it, to two other brand name cat foods (Surf and Turf and Seafood Sensations).

This is because Rise and Shine has every flavor cats are known to like: chicken, salmon, whole grain oats, egg, cheese and bacon. Rise and Shine is also fortified with vitamins A, C, D and E, so cats can be happy and active. My cats either didn’t know they were eating oats, or they now think their diets have been lacking oats. Either way, they happily and hastily ate their oats.

Despite its name, Rise and Shine is appealing to cats at any hour.

We got our free samples in the above referenced name brand bags, and decided to give them a try. After the 2nd sample, and upon returning to our ‘bag of the week’, all 5 cats looked at me as if I’m holding back. Rise and Shine makes all other dry cat foods seem inadequate.

I can only hope my local grocery store carries this new cat food, and in the big bags. If not, I can tell my cats want me to spend countless hours touring stores, until I find it.

Product Reviews: Cat Tree and more.

Sorry about the delay in getting the review posted.

Item: Pawhut  72″  Beige Cat Tree Condo Pet Scratcher Furniture

Price: $89.97 + $20.00 shipping total = 105.97

Sold by: Aosom Direct

Rating: 4 out of 5 paws

Pros: This tree is very easy to put together, one person can manage but it’s better with two. The cats like the height and enjoy playing underneath it or climbing it and batting at the pre-attached mice.

Cons: The overwhelming smell of wood glue was a major issue, the smell lasted for about 4-5 days. Once gone everything was fine. The smell did not deter the cats.

Delivery: I ordered it on March 13 and it arrived on the 20th.

I wanted to get a cat tree for the office area so the cats have a place to nap, place and hang out. We already have a large tree and I wanted something that would support my cats as they are a bit hefty (10+lbs). So after browsing through the reviews at Amazon.com, I settled on this one because it had 3 perches, lots of scratching posts and two little “offices” for them to lay in. The assembly took maybe 30-45 minutes with two people. The instructions are pretty simple and the supplies are provided. For added fun, I put the tree near a bookshelf so they have room to spread out if they desired and put a crinkle bag and a few other toys at the base of the tree.

I have seen all four of my cats use the tree and I am very happy with the product. I would highly recommend it for anyone looking for a good cat tree. This was the better deal for that type of cat tree as the others available were $100+

Item: HDP Cat Tunnel Collapsible PET KITTEN PLAY 48″ L Rainbow Tunnel

Price: $13.58 + $5.58 = $19.96

Sold by: Happy Dog Place

Rating: 4 out of 5 paws

Pros: It’s 4 feet long and keeps my kitten out of plastic bags.

Cons: Doesn’t come with velcro to attach to cat cubes purchased separately. Instead the product has strings at both ends, which doesn’t help if you’ve purchased cubes. Other than that it’s a great alternative to  plastic or cloth bags.

Delivery: I ordered it on March 31st arrived on April 3rd.

Since my kitten loves plastic bags, I wanted to get something that would last a little longer for him. So I got the tunnel. He loves to jump into it and play. There is also a coupon from Happy Dog Place inside the package to get 10% off if you order directly from them. It turns out that ordering from Amazon.com is cheaper (for me).

Item: Grab bag assorted 20 pieces cat toys bag

Price: $6.34 = $6.34

Sold by: Happy Dog Place

Rating: 5 out of 5 paws

Pros: There is a wide variety of toys in this bag.

Cons: The items received are not what is pictured.

Delivery: I ordered it on March 31st arrived on April 3rd.

Some of the reviews on this product was a bit harsh, but I understand some cats are pickier than others and a few people were disappointed that the items received were not what was pictured. I have no complaints. Plus they make great raffle prizes for cat grab bags.
