How old is Gemini?

Gemini is 10 months old

Where did the name come from?

He was named for the song “Gemini Dream” by Moody Blues. It was the favorite song of the mama he didn’t get a chance to know. She passed away before he came to his forever home.

How did Gemini come into your life?

A friend from Tennessee found him and just KNEW he belonged with us! He flew on an airplane to get to his home in Oklahoma! (Thanks, Julie!)

Did you have to keep an extra eye on Gemini just in case?

Always! Gemini has a bad habit of not knowing his own limitations and tends to tease the other cats in the household until they get peeved enough to fight back! He’s a little pistol!!

Is there anything he can’t do?

He was born with very short back legs. They are missing bones. As a result, he can’t jump more than about a foot off the ground. And one of his front feet is clubbed and doesn’t have any claws, so he can’t pull himself up onto things. As a result, he’s not able to climb and jump onto the cat trees like the other cats do. He usually drags one of his back legs because its a bit painful to walk on the tip of it. BUT, bring out the treat bag and watch him RUN!!

Do his fur siblings realize he’s different?

The only thing they know is that when he’s picking on them, they can climb up high and he can’t get to them! (to their relief!!)

How does he get along with his fursiblings?

His brother, Stewie, is his favorite. The 2 of them are inseparable! When he’s not picking on the others, they get along just fine!!

Do you do any special workouts with him to strengthen his legs?

As soon as he arrived here at his forever home, we started daily workouts using a fish on a string and stick. We waved it in front of him and he would do his best to catch it. We would do it at least a couple of times a day until he would tire of it. Now, we use Da Bird and we also have a laser toy that he chases. Its important to keep him using those legs. But we have a fine line we walk! Too much and he can hurt himself!

Does he take any medications?

On the days when he is hurting, he will drag his leg and struggle harder to walk. That’s the only way to know when he’s hurting. He does have pain meds that he takes when he’s hurting.

What Stewie taught him?

How to be NAUGHTY! Stewie is his best friend, as well as his big brother! The minute they met, they were very close! Stewie taught him how to get into everything and how to get his way! He taught him how to get attention! How to tease their other brothers and sisters! Stewie also keeps him VERY clean with lots and lots of baths! Gemini loves that! He tries so hard to do everything that Stewie does! He just can’t climb up as high as Stewie can! He tries hard, though!

What advice would you have for someone adopting a cat that needs extra care?

It can be a lot of work, but VERY rewarding!! When Gemini was smaller, he had his own special area to stay in at night or when we were gone, just to keep him safe. As he’s grown older, he doesn’t need quiet at much watching over, but we still have to make sure he doesn’t get into trouble that he can’t get out of! We have to pay attention to him so that we know when he’s hurting, since he can’t tell us. We’ve had to learn the signs! And we have to keep up with his daily play therapy to keep his muscles strong! But it can be so rewarding!! My biggest advice is to find a support system!! There are always others that you can count on to be there when you need them!
